Jerusalem Ministry Formation

The Jerusalem Ministry Formation program is a special course designed for people in training for ministry, whether as clergy or lay leaders. It is both a pilgrimage delving deeply into the places where Christian and Jewish faith is rooted and also an experience in formation of Anglican identity. It also engages in encounter with all three Abrahamic faiths, reflecting on the challenges of mission and ministry in the context from which participants come.

This course will encompass the general outline of the Palestine of Jesus course, visiting specially chosen sites as well that contribute to deeper biblical learning and enrichment of the preacher’s work.

Overview

Jerusalem Ministry Formation (JMF) is an immersive study pilgrimage that engages the Land of the Holy One—its people, places, and faith traditions—as a means of Christian leadership formation. The course encompasses the general outline and aims of the Palestine of Jesus course but with a greater emphasis on ministry outcomes, such as biblical geography and preaching, theological reflection, and ecumenical and interfaith work. Engaging Christian communities in the Holy Land and the contemporary context of Israel and Palestine, JMF explores issues of Christian identity, service, and witness.

Jerusalem Ministry Formation is generally a closed program for an exclusive group, such as seminary students, diocesan clergy, and congregational leaders. Led by the staff of St George’s College, JMF allows input from group leaders in planning the course. A JMF study pilgrimage may be designed for people training for ministry or as a continuing education experience for church leaders, whether clergy or lay.

If you are interested in bringing a group of seminaries, clergy, or lay leaders to st George’s College to experience the Holy Land as ministry formation, please contact Dean Richard Sewell at dean@sgcjerusalem.org.

Likewise, due to the nature of JMF, please contact the college registrar (genia@sgcjerusalem.org) before enrolling in this course.

In the Words of Our Pilgrims

“This was so much more than visiting the places I had read about. Scripture, worship and community came together in a way I will carry with me.”

Now, I can see and understand what I had heard all of my life. The experience was beyond comparison; it was humbling, and I received such a blessing.

We rode the gondola up and walked down. It was an excellent day and incredible views and a nice dip in the Dead Sea. I was the lone Canadian with many Aussies and a few Americans. Incredible memories!
