Description

Acts in the Holy Land (Eastertide through Pentecost) engages the Scriptures, places, and pilgrimage traditions associated with the books of Acts that are set in present-day Israel-Palestine (e.g., Acts 1–12, 15, 21–26). Particular attention is given to the Jerusalem feast days of the Ascension of Jesus and the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, including the attendance of special worship services in the city. The course will cover the importance of the Temple in Acts, as well as the places and traditions of the stoning of Stephen, the death of Judas, and the conversion of Cornelius. Additional figures include: James the Just (brother of Jesus), Philip the Deacon, the Ethiopian Eunuch, Dorcas (Tabitha), Peter, and Paul. While the course is largely focused on Jerusalem, day trips are planned to Bethlehem, Bethany, Jericho, Nablus (tbc), Hebron (tbc), and Caesarea Maritima. In addition to Ascension and Pentecost, the course will cover the other great feasts/places of salvation in the Jerusalem area, namely, the nativity, baptism, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus. The course will include speakers on contemporary issues in the Holy Land. All nights will be spent at St George’s College in Jerusalem. Note: there is no trip to the Galilee.
